Let there be discos

Barry Kennedy

A KYNETON police officer wants to bring Blue Light discos back to the Macedon Ranges after a 10-year absence.

Sen-Constable Joe Grbac said he wanted the disco back by the end of the year.

"It gives kids a fun and safe space and it's fun for us as well and a chance for police to engage younger kids," he said.

He said a fully equipped Blue Light disco van with lighting and DJ equipment was available in Sunbury and could be taken to under-12 parties all over the Macedon Ranges.

Leading Sen-Constable Elizabeth Elliott said Blue Light discos had run in Sunbury for 20 years. At least six were run in Sunbury every year as well as lunchtime discos at schools.

"We love it and it's really popular. We've had up to 400 children at Memorial Hall," she said.

The disco van was the result of a fundraising campaign supported by local business.

Sen-Constable Grbac said the Victoria Police show band was due to visit the Macedon Ranges later this year and he hoped the first disco would coincide with its visit.

He plans to hold a meeting with interested parents, businesses and venues by the end of the month.

Last year Sen-Constable Grbac was named Victoria Police Youth Officer of the Year.
