Town's worst spot

THE intersection of Evans and Station street tops the list of Sunbury's five most dangerous intersections.
A new VicRoads report revealed to the Hume Council tables crash statistics across Hume between July 2002 and June last year.
Ten casualty crashes were reported at the Sunbury intersection, three involving serious injuries.
A casualty crash is a vehicle accident where one or more people suffer minor injuries that require medical treatment, receive serious injuries or are killed.
As a result, the council will install traffic lights as part of its Station St upgrade, which started last month.
It is part of $11.5 million to be spent this year repairing and resurfacing roads.
Council planning infrastructure manager John Monaghan said road safety was a top priority.
"We must continue to build new roundabouts, road humps and resurface and maintain local roads and footpaths to improve community safety," he said.
Across Hume, casualty crashes have dropped by 35 per cent over five years. A total of 495 was reported between 2002 and 2003, compared with 319 between 2006 and 2007.
Mayor Mohamad Abbouche said improvements were making a difference.
"While it's clear that our investment into road improvements is reducing the number of road casualty crashes in Hume, more still needs to be done," he said.
Sunbury's second-worst accident blackspot was the corner of Riddell and Dalrymple roads.
Seven casualties were reported at the unsignalised T-intersection, where Dalrymple Rd stops and faces a stop sign.
The council has asked VicRoads to investigate, and also consider traffic lights for the Gap Rd and Horne St roundabout, where six accidents were reported.
Other top blackspots include Brook and O'Shanassy streets and the Bulla-Diggers Rest and Loemans roads intersection in Bulla.
Hume's worst intersection is in Somerton at the corner of Sydney Rd and Cooper St, where 31 crashes, including two fatalities, were reported.
A 2005 RACV study found Horne St was labelled the state's 10th most congested road.
